The Agur Lake Camp Swing For Kids Charity Golf Tournament representatives are shown here receiving a cheque from the Presenting Sponsor, Summerland Timber Mart. Summerland Timber Mart has supported this event each of the 10 years it has existed, which raises over $10,000.00 each year which is used to operate B.C.’s only barrier free wilderness camp for children and adults with special needs and their families/caregivers.

The Swing for Kids charity golf tournament is one of the biggest annual fundraisers for Agur Lake Camp, and for its 10th anniversary, the presenting sponsor is going to be Summerland Timber Mart.
“We have been a part of it since Summerland’s Bonnar Dowler first envisioned the camp,” said Timber Mart manager Ken Sewell. “We look forward to seeing all our friends, partners, and customers at this fantastic event.”
Agur Lake Camp is a barrier-free, wheelchair accessible wilderness camp for special needs children and adults, located 20 kilometres west of Summerland. Its story started three decades ago when Dowler vowed to establish a camp for children with special needs and their families after his son was born with a severely malformed heart. The ambitious project took a long time to build and a lot of community support and volunteers, but in July 2013, the camp welcomed its first visitors.
“Ken, like his father Art Sewell before him, has always been community-orientated. Summerland Timber Mart has been an invaluable support and supplier to our camp and to the community in general. The camp couldn’t have grown as far and as fast as we have without the generosity and the care of Ken and his team. We have a lot to be grateful for,” said Beth Bonten, president of the Agur Lake Camp Society.
The annual golf tournament has become a local tradition and like Agur Lake Camp attracts participants from throughout the Okanagan. It combines a day of golf with an evening banquet that includes live and silent auctions to raise funds for the camp society. The funds are used to operate and enhance the camp.
The camp offers fully furnished, fully accessible cabins — equipped with adjustable hospital beds, portable lifts and roll-in showers — as well as dry RV sites, fishing docks, a communal fire pit, picnic pavilion and outdoor washroom, all surrounded by paved trails so that every camper, regardless of their level of mobility or special need, can enjoy nature and the outdoor experience.
The tournament takes place on May 26 at the Summerland Golf and Country Club. For golfer and event volunteer registration or sponsorship information visit agurlakecamp.ca/society/swing-for-kids-charity-golf-tournament.
